Bike Love in Canmore – Winning Awards

Bike love, bike lust, call it what you like, Canmore is crazy about bicycles! Adding to the frenzied love affair is the Canadian Rockies Mountain Bike Fest, a landmark for-fun event coming in 2017.

The developing Fest recently won second place in the Entrepreneurship Challenge at the 16th annual Growing Rural Tourism Conference, an initiative of the Camrose Regional Exhibition, in partnership with Alberta Culture & Tourism, Alberta Association of Agricultural Societies, Tourism Camrose, and Travel Alberta.

Growing Rural Tourism Entrepreneurship Challenge winners: 1st Place Rancho Relaxo Resort, Rocky Mountain House; 2nd Place Canadian Rockies Mountain Bike Fest, Canmore; 3rd Place Discovery Wildlife Park, Innisfail

“This is an important accomplishment for the Fest. We’ve had amazing support so far, but an event of this magnitude requires seed money to develop. Having mentorship will also be helpful to move the project into execution at the standard we want.”

“Tourism is an important industry in our province—and a key factor in diversifying Alberta’s economy. The Growing Rural Tourism Conference develops and supports tourism experiences that are off the beaten path, bringing economic benefits to rural communities. Innovation and the expansion of travel experiences in Alberta will facilitate the growth of our burgeoning tourism industry.”

Ricardo Miranda | Minister of Culture and Tourism

Canmore is touted as Canada’s mountain sports destination and is quickly establishing itself as a bike friendly community. With those credentials it is not surprising that Canmore has an inherent culture that embraces all things bike. In 2016 more than fifty cycling events were hosted in Canmore offering over a hundred days of programming. The proposed Canadian Rockies Mountain Bike Fest will build on events such as Canmore Bike Month and Canmore Bike Fest held in previous years. The Town of Canmore has been effectively encouraging residents and visitors to walk or bike instead of relying on automobiles for transportation, the Canmore Bicycle Friendly Business District Guidebook developed with Canmore businesses and residents visions Canmore as the most bicycle‐friendly town in Alberta, and even the Town’s transportation plan sees Canmore as Alberta’s premier walking and cycling community. The momentum in the area can be seen in the plethora of organizations such as the Rundle Mountain Cycling Club, Bow Valley Mountain Bike Alliance, Canmore Cycling Culture, Friends of Kananaskis, and Canmore Community Cruisers. Need more proof that Canmore is bonkers about bikes? Incredibly there are four bike shops in a town with a permanent population of just 13,000, three mountain bike skills parks, and over 500km of trail within an hour drive. And Best of the Bow recently awarded Canmore’s bike pathways around town “best use of tax dollars”.  The culmination of all this has set the stage for something bigger and better

“The Canadian Rockies Mountain Bike Fest will bring together mountain bike alliances, destination marketing organizations, coaches, clubs and industry so all of the great mountain bike experiences in the region can be found in one mammoth package.
