Canmore Race Recap – Osprey Kootenay Rockies Enduro

by Megan Rose | www.pinkbike.com

Round two of the Osprey Kootenay Rockies Enduro Series went down this weekend. As always, it wouldn’t have been the same without the local support, Jay from Cafe Canmore was integral and we wish him best of luck and a quick recovery, but that didn’t deter him from helping us get sorted leading up to the race. Also, big thanks to Torben for setting an amazing course.

In typical Canmore style, the day before the race was a picturesque, sunshine, clear skies and as the Bro’s would say ‘hero dirt‘! Race day was a mixed bag of weather, rain, mud and slop, with the sun poking its way out just in time for awards. You really can’t beat the views of the mountains in Canmore and the Nordic Centre staff keep that place running proper!

Special thanks to Trapper Snowboards from Revelstoke, they brought a surprise for all the racers, A FREE BOARD. They gave it away with a massive game of heads or tails!

Keep an eye out for the leader Jerseys from Kazoom Custom Cycling Apparel. The guys from Kazoom are legends, always making the drive out to support the series! Darcy Neniska and Tara Walmsley will hold onto them until the next race. David Harder and Shane Jensen are tied for second and hot on the heels of Neniska to capture the leader’s Jersey!

Canmore was the second event to offer the Intro Course that the KR Enduro Series has offered. This course cut-off the two most technical stages and shortened the distance, making it a fun way to get out with your kids, try an enduro for the first time or just have a great laugh on your bike with friends!

The youngest rider ever at the Enduro Series – Zachary Baggotti. At only 8 years old, be sure to watch out for him in a few years when he is standing on the podium!

The enduro series is truly family friendly sport, being that it was Father’s Day, there were many Dads out on course with their Sons, the only question being, who is faster!? Evan Wall was the Junior U19 winner (Blue shirt) and was excited to be racing alongside his dad.

Prepping the volunteers to head out on course before the downpour of rain started!

The course started out in the Nordic Centre Stadium, and had a leg busting 7 stages! A course that is only 23km in length, however, the mud definitely made it feel like double!

Patrick Delaney showing us how to eject from the bike when things go wrong on Stage 4 that had anything but grip on the clay mud chutes.

This course did a great job of highlighting every decent in the Nordic Centre, making for a six minute stage for stage 3. This stage was a favourite, mixing in open flats to pedal, steep chutes, roots and rocks! LOOK AT THOSE TIRES, ice cream cones.

Here is Tara (Open Womens winner) in full enduro form as she weaves and bobs her way through stage 5. Stage 5 was one of the more technical stages, keeping the pucker factor high, as if the mud wasn’t enough to do that!

Stage 7 was a short stage, but finishes with an awkward drop/roll into the finish line. Worst part, it’s right in front of lodge, so everyone is there to cheer you on when you fall! This one saw a few riders crash and run to the finish line, this rider seems confident!
